“Today we have scientific evidence that confirms the importance of creative stimulation to maintaining brain health and that a healthy brain in turn maximizes our capacity to deal successfully with our environment and the health challenges there for us.” Gene D. Cohen, M.D., PhD, author
Education and Performance
NextStage Productions endeavors to provide educational and performance opportunities to seniors that will enrich individual lives as well as the lives of those in the community. We believe that acquiring knowledge and sharing with others enhances self-esteem and gives purpose to those in the senior age demographic. Our classes are scheduled to build skills by offering sequential courses or by pairing so that students may take classes that cross pollinate in teaching ideas. For example, we have successfully paired Broadway dance with Musical Theater and also voice study with Alexander Technique.
Instructors are chosen from a large pool of area artists. We have teachers that teach at the community college and in their own studios and businesses. Many artists have professional experience in New York and LA in film and stage and most are current performers. We ask each of our teachers (private contractors) to develop lessons that support the NextStage mission and focus.
When structuring classes and events, we follow the yearly schedule. Informational and social meetings July/August 8 week courses September-November 1-2 day weekend workshops- February/March 8 week courses April-May 6 day Performing Arts Workshop- June Classes are generally held once a week for 1.5 hours. The longer classes have a student showcase performance at the end as does the Musical Theater/Dance class in the Summer Camp. At times when classes are not scheduled, we take time to plan and evaluate and when possible adding outreach performances.
NextStage Productions understands that performing/creative arts have a social component and with that knowledge, we program social events that utilize our creative and performing abilities but with the intent of providing a social, community outreach function. Flash-Mob performances in open performance venues, street performances and trips to area Arts performances are scheduled.
